About this Item
First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1963. The book was originally published in the USA by the Dial Press, New York in 1962.***Near fine in turquoise cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. Boards clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean. Internally near fine also with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean and uncreased. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, illustrated by Albany Wiseman. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, and retains the original publisher's price of 16s net. Dustwrapper nicely preserved, without any creasing or tears. Some browning to the edges and the spine of the dustwrapper. ***211 pages. 208 mm x 140 mm. ***'"I kept looking all around, feeding my eyes and mind and heart on the beauty of that grim landscape. Hard country, the people called it. A cow might walk half a mile for a mouthful of grass, and five miles for a drink of water. If the ranch had been mine I'd have sold the cattle and stocked the place with wild horses and buffalo, coyotes and wolves, and let the beef industry go to ruin'". ***'In "The Brave Cowboy" [filmed as "Lonely are the Brave" Edward Abbey "dealt outstandingly," to quote the Sunday Times, "with an individual's struggle to resist capture by society." In "Fire on the Mountain" this struggle is passionately renewed; and it is fitting that the end, when it comes, should take place up in the hills, in country as wild and untamed as when the Apaches roamed in. Edward Abbey clearly loves this land, and he describes it, and the challenges it makes on a man, magnificently. [Quote from the publisher's dustwrapper blurb] ***First impression of the first UK edition, published a year after the US edition. Edward Abbey's early novels are quite scarce now, and the British editions are generally harder to find than the American first editions. This copy is in very nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7296
