Octavo, original decorated blue cloth, front cover stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. Eight stories set mostly in the Far East, exploring various cultural conflicts. "He gives us the atmosphere of the Far East, which he knows as few Anglo-Saxons know it, and yet he preserves his detachment of spirit as Loti and Lafcadio Hearn do not. He pictures its strangeness, its insidious charm, and its dangers. The book should not be missed by those who are not afraid of a shudder or two, and who care for stories of artistic vitality." - New York Times, 3 July 1909. Mild foxing to edges of text block, endpapers a bit tanned, a tight, bright, near fine copy. (#114739).
