FREER GALLERY OF ART 2 VOLUMES: 1- CHINA & 2- JAPAN LARGE FORMAT HC DJ SLIPCASES NF. On offer here is a set of two volumes of art from the Freer Gallery on the Mall in Washington D.C. The two large hard cover books (10 ¾ x 14 ¾ inches 184 pages each) were published by the Freer Gallery with a Library of Congress Catalog number from 1972; otherwise, they are undated. They are identically bound in white boards with gilt decorations on the cover and gilt titles on the spine; each has a distinctive pictorial dust jacket for presentation and protection. In the case of the China volume a Preface was prepared by John A. Pope then Director of the Freer Gallery. For Japan the Preface was prepared by Harold P. Stern at the time Director Designate of the Freer. The Explanation of the Plates for both books was prepared by Thomas Lawton then Curator of Chinese Art at the Gallery. Both books are housed in similar cardboard slipcases. They are both abundantly illustrated; there are 131 plates in the China volume and 128 in the Japan volume. The plates are both in color and b&w. Both volumes include a final section with the Explanation of the Plates. This would make an ideal gift for a young art enthusiast. Condition: This set of two large hard cover volumes is in near fine condition. What little wear and tear exists has been absorbed by the slipcases and this is minimal itself. The slipcases show some light soiling and obvious signs of use particularly around the openings. The rear cover of the Japan dust jacket has some wrinkles from separation of its layers- hardly noticeable. None of that wear is serious. The books themselves are pristine both dust jackets and hard covers themselves. They are unmarked and clean and bright throughout. These books are not ex-library or remainders.…
