This landmark Act, passed shortly after the merger of the North West Company with the Hudson Bay Company, authorized the Crown to grant the newly-reorganized HBC an exclusive license to trade with the First Nations of western North America beyond the territory of Rupert's Land for a period of 21 years. The grant of exclusive trade did not apply to territory claimed or occupied by the United States, nor did it apply to the region west of the Rocky Mountains. The expanded trade privileges came with new responsibilities, including the diminishing or preventing of the sale or distribution of spirituous liquors to the Indians and the promotion of their moral and religious improvement. The Act helped to save the nearly-bankrupt fur trade industry in Canada.
