The Faber Book of Letters. Letters Written in the English Language 1578-1939

Hardback. First Edition. Ticks and numbers in pencil to some pages. Previous owners name and address sticker to inside cover. In this anthology, Felix pryor has deployed his formidable scholarship and expertise to collect letters of every description - from the letter of consolation to 'Good Bess' from her 'loving Soveraine' Elizabeth to John Clare's message from the underworld ('I am in a Madhouse & quite forget your Name or who you are'). Some of the letters are published here for the first time, including the earliest known love letter from Nelson to Lady Hamilton, in which he tells her of a dream the previous night ('You came in and taking Me in Your embrace wispered I love nothing but You My nelson'). Detailed, poignant, bizarre, deranged, the letters here show humanity in all its moods. This is a uniquely engrossing anthology of arresting voices resuced from the Babel of history. 319 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).…
