Reviews
Gr 4 Up--This brightly illustrated volume introduces quilting projects and fabric art from the very simple to a complete nine-patch quilt. Instructions are included for assembling a basic sewing box and purchasing supplies. Money- and time-saving tips as well as safety suggestions are displayed in bright purple boxes. Projects include putting designs on fabric by using free-hand drawing, coloring-book pages, rubber stamps, stencils, tessellations, glue resist, and sun printing. Different types of applique are used to make a mola, 3-D faces, and a Victorian crazy quilt. Many of the steps are shown in full-color photographs, which also feature a variety of children who are obviously proud of their creations. Mary Cobb's Quilt-Block History of Pioneer Days (Millbrook, 1995) and Barbara J. Eikmeier's Kids Can Quilt (That Patchwork Place, 1997) complement but do not duplicate the instructions found here. Children as well as teachers, parents, group leaders, and librarians will find this a good starting place for making that special quilt.
