First edition. Octavo. 278,l [2]ads pp. Green cloth gilt. Some foxing on the first and last few leaves, else near fine. Ownership signature of "W. Atlee Burpee. Fordhook June 9/ 02 Recd. from England". Burpee has extensively underlined and notated passages in the book, and used the last two blank leaves to make extensive notes, all in pencil. Fordhook was the family farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. After a successful career as a breeder of poultry, Burpee founded the Burpee Seed Company in 1876. Although no longer under family control, the company still exists today.
