The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind, other than a remainder mark to the bottom edge. The Binding is vermilion (red-orange) quarter cloth to tan boards, colors uniform throughout, with a bright gilt hinge design on the front panel, bright gilt title, etc., to the spine, unmarked vermilion endpapers, and all corners square and sharp. The Dust Jacket is bright, colors uniform throughout, and intact, but for a small hole at the spine and wear to the top edge, with the original price ($14.95) intact on the front flap, See photos. 571 pages. 6 1/4" x 9 1/2". This historical novel, the author's second book, centers on the gens de couleur libres, or free people of color, of New Orleans in the years before the Civil War. In particular, it is set in the 1840s and deals with race, especially as it affects family issues and struggles. The novel was the basis for the 2001 mini-series of the same name, that starred James Earl Jones, Forest Whitaker, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Eartha Kitt, Pam Grier, Ben Vereen, Jennifer Beals, Robert Ri'chard, Gloria Reuben, Peter Gallagher, Daniel Sunjata, among others.
