The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind, other than a remainder mark to the bottom edge. The Binding is vermilion (red-orange) quarter cloth to tan boards, colors uniform throughout, with a bright gilt hinge design on the front panel, bright gilt title, etc., to the spine, unmarked vermilion endpapers, and all corners square and sharp. This historical novel, the author's second book, centers on the gens de couleur libres, or free people of color, of New Orleans in the years before the Civil War. In particular, it is set in the 1840s and deals with race, especially as it affects family issues and struggles.
