About this Item

The first book by this somewhat eccentric writer, journalist, and magazine editor. He had been contributing stories to magazines, chiefly 'The New Yorker", since 1963 and most of the fourteen stories in this collection were printed first in various periodicals. On my usual skim through a volume of stories, looking for a great opening line, I found this one: "This is my predicament: there is a Cheerio on the bath mat and no one will pick it up." This not only gets the story "A Blessed Day" off to an interesting start, but it seems an apt sentence for a man known for his gentle eccentricities. First published in the U.S. by Random House, the previous year, this first U.K. printing is a very good copy. There is some fading on the spine, and a name and address on front endpaper, otherwise it's in great shape. The dust jacket is also very good, with darkened spine panel, and minor wear and nicks at head of spine. MC.
