About this Item
Paris; Grasset, 1951. First edition. [20,5x13,5 cm]. 190, (3, 3 blanks) pp. Printed wrappers. Edges uncut. A light folding mark on front cover. A lovely copy. "A similar and even stranger case of moral sickness is the subject of Le Feu sur la Terre (first performed 1950), which is generally regarded as Mauriac's best play. It features the fierce, rapacious affection of Laure for her brother Maurice; her passionately relentless drive is not founded on physical love but simply on the evil desire to be the unique possessor of another's soul. Not surprisingly, hatred flares up between Laure and Maurice's wife. Meanwhile, for good measure, the passion of avarice is personified in the father, Osmin, who has mastered the habit of forcing his whole family to economize because of imaginary impoverishment." (Norrish, New Tragedy and Comedy in France, 1945-1970, pp. 18). Inscribed by the author: ?Au docteur Carl David Moselius / en hommage de profonde gratitude et en souvenir des heures inoubliables que le dois à son beau pays / François Mauriac / Stockholm 14 dec 52? Moselius (1890-1968), art historian who published studies on e.g. Tessin and Louis Masreliez. Seller Inventory # 16402
