First English Edition (NAP, 1914 on the title page). A very rare book, it is in very nice condition, actually quite remarkable condition taking into account that it was published in 1914. A little credit goes to me, but considerably more goes to William H. Walker. William Hultz Walker owned this book a long time ago. On both the half-title and title page he stamped 'This Book Is The Property Of Wm. H. Walker, Mass. Institute Of Technology.' Usually, as a seller or as a collector of books, stamped names are not what you want to see. That is not the case here, because 'Dr. Walker can rightfully be considered one of the pioneering founders of the modern chemical engineering discipline.' Here is a short biography from part of his Wikipedia page: 'William Hultz Walker was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was the first graduate in chemistry at Penn State. He took his Ph.D. at Göttingen in 1892. In 1894 he accepted the chair of industrial chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where from 1908 he was also director of the research laboratory of applied chemistry. Walker was vice president of the International Congress of Applied Chemistry in 1893 and president of the American Electrochemical Society in 1910. The New York Section of the American Chemical Society conferred on him its Nichols medal in 1908. William H. Walker, as he is commonly referenced, was one of the pioneers of chemical engineering practice and principles in the United States. In 1917 he founded the School of Chemical Engineering Practice.' And, as you can see from the photos of the dark blue covers, he took very good care of his book. These covers are very clean, with just the slightest amount of soiling. The gilt lettering on the front and spine is remarkably bright. The corners and edges are in excellent shape. The spine ends have only some crinkling. The page edges are very clean. The book is square. The spine is not slanted. The binding is very good. The pages are nicely tight. There are no cracks or spaces between any of them. There is a thin space between the front inside cover and first front end paper, both of which are advertisements. A little bit of the webbing can be seen there. However, most importantly, the front cover is very securely bound as is the first front end paper. There is only a hint of a space along parts of the juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper. Again the rear cover and rear end paper are very securely bound. The pages in the book are exceptionally clean. In scrolling through, I haven't found even one instance of soiling. The pages are only lightly toned. The very tip of the top corner of the first 15 or so pages got a little bit scrunched or bumped at some point. As a result there is a very tiny crease at their tip, very far away from the print. I didn't see any other conspicuous creasing on any of the other pages, no turned-down corners. I did just notice that Dr. Walker also stamped his name at the top of page 105, not touching the print. There are no other markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. It is NOT ex-library. One page has one penciled arrow and one penciled underlining. They could be easily erased if one chose to. I've gone through the pages pretty carefully and I'm pretty sure I'm not missing any other writing. There are a few illustrations in the book, 327 to be exact. They all appear to be in excellent condition.
