About this Item
B : 33 x 23 cm, numbered: 126/500 and signed by the artist - Marebito is an archaic Japanese word. It can be translated into English as foreigner , stranger , visitor , a marginal figure , or person from beyond the boundaries . In this book, Fiona Tan is the marebito who traveled to Japan for the first time in August 2000. The two volumes that come bound with an elastic band into a portfolio tied with a ribbon divide her experiences into visual and textual formats. The artist s color photographs alternate with reproductions of found black and white post cards in one book while the other books presents excerpts from her diary alongside writings from travelers in the fifteenth and seventeenth century.
