Add to basket43 pages, mimeographed from typescript. Speech Defect Series No. 2. Gifford was a pioneering educator working to solve the problem of stuttering, stammering, and other speech disorders. She was one of the first to realize and promote the idea that the problem was not mechanical but psychological. In the introduction she writes, 'It must be fully understood in the beginning that we believe the causes of these nervous speech disorders are psychologic and that the spasmodic manifestations of the speech organs are only the external effect of deep-seated emotional conflicts.' *** In 1926, Gifford became the chief of the first state-level educational organization devoted to speech therapy. This was the second publication of the newly formed California Bureau of Correction of Speech Defects and Disorders in the state Department of Education. The text appears to reference a 1931 publication of the Bureau, which was then in preparation, dating this to between 1926 and 1931. *** A very scarce and early work from a pioneer in the treatment of stuttering. First edition (first printing). Very good in original green cloth with a printed title label on the front panel.
