William Combe's first successful work was The Diaboliad, a satirical attack on contemporary manners and morals, published in 1776. He clearly sought to capitalise on that success and published 'The First of April' the following year, 1777. He later had much greater success with the Dr Syntax series about 40 years later. 38 pages, quarto format, first edition, now housed in modern cloth covers. Text in good condition apart from the final leaf (see pictures). Small tear to top corner of title page.
