1860. First edition. lxxx, 120pp., a folding plate and black and white illustration in the text. John Gibson Macvicar (1800-1884), born in Dundee, was educated at St Andrews and Edinburgh Universities. He was a lecturer in natural history at St Andrews, and was a pastor of the Scottish Church in Ceylon, 1839-52. He published several works on science, religion and philosophy, of which the best known is probably his 'Elements of the Economy of Nature; or the Principles of Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology.' The present volume is one of his scarcer works. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with a paper title label on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and soiling to the boards and a small bit of bubbling to the cloth on the rear board. The spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
