[Mexican-American] [Literature] TUCK, Ruth D. Not with the Fist: a Study of Mexican-Americans in a Southwest City. New York: Harcourt Brace. 1946. Stated First Edition. 8vo; 234pp. Publisher's cloth, spine gilt. Decorated dust jacket. Mylar wrapper. This non-fictional narrative operates as a discussion meant to educate the reader on the integration of Mexican-Americans in the Southern California city of Descanso. The book introduces itself in the foreward with a chronicle about the zoot suit riots of Los Angeles and the discriminatory acts against American born Mexican citizens. It continues to read like a historical chronicling of Mexican-American history in the Southern hemisphere of the United States. From the Spanish colonial period to immigration and it's dealings with classism and colorism, to acculturation and integration into Western ideologies, down to the advantages and disadvantages in dealings with the law and white Americans. The author paints a realistic picture of the small town, who's name means "rest from labor", and it's inhabitants of mostly Mexican-American heritage as she dissects the progression of cultural norms within a Western society. Cloth lightly soiled, gilt dulled. Corners slightly bumped. Dustjacket is chipped and was internally repaired, lacking front flap. Binding is tight, pages and text are crisp and clear. Overall very good condition. Seller Inventory # 20199
