Add to basketOriginal red cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and front board. No dust-jacket. Some dampstain to bottom corner at spine, resulting in faded boards and spine, and red staining to pastedowns and page-edges. First edition from 1952. Sometimes considered the first Beat novel, the book is a gritty depiction of life in post-war West Village, as the main character Diane, and others, fall into heroin abuse and a world of violence. The novel explores a number of unusual topics for its time, including psychotherapy for drug abuse, women's liberation and sexual freedom, inequality and racism, and more. George Mandel (1920-2021), a native of New York City, was an American author and artist whose work includes novels, interviews, novellas, cartoons and short stories. Hardcover, acceptable condition, dampstained. 480 pages, octavo.
