Octavo, original blue illustrated wrappers bound into a half leather binding. Original cover illustration by Norman Wilkinson. Kipling's account of the recently strengthened fleet of the British Royal Navy at the turn of the 20th century first appeared as a group of five articles in the Morning Post in November 1898. Allowed to join the Fleet at sea, Kipling here offers an intimate portrait of the ships and their crew. 84pp. Approximately 7 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition gilt titles, 5 gilt bands and gilt titles, worn top and tail with some loss. Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn with minor loss. Boards good condition original blue paper covers rebound into half leather binding with marbled boards, the illustration of the blue cover is by Norman Wilkinson, there is a scratch to the leather in the top right hand corner of the front board and the leather in the top left hand corner of the rear board is worn, blind stamped WH Smith to the rear blue wrap. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, all speckled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition plain, lightly tanned with some foxing around the edges. End papers good condition plain, there is a previous owner s signature on the front end paper, lightly tanned with some foxing. Title good condition lightly tanned.
