New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1891. No. 85 in Appletons' Town and Country Library series. Hardcover in VG+ condition with light sunning to spine and board edges. No internal marks and NOT ex-library. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish novelist who began life as a clergyman but turned to poetry and realistic writing because of his unorthodox views. His writings were famous in Great Britian and the US, but his reputation declined after his death (except among authors like G.K. Chesterton, W.H. Auden, C.S. Lewis etc.). His work was rediscovered and subsequently republished in the 1970's. This was one of MacDonald's last works of fiction, and one of only a few to be told from the perspective of a female narrator. It combines an atmosphere of myth and realism, deals with themes of psychology, and filial and romantic love and explores the corruptive lust for power alongside the redemptive work of childlike innocence and faith.
