Howes calls this a "corner-stone narrative of early Texas." It was reissued several times. Morrell was a circuit-riding Baptist preacher who also fought Indians and Mexicans. He arrived in Texas at the end of 1835, and witnessed Sam Houston's struggles with Santa Ana, the Commanche invasion of 1840, and many of the defining episodes of Texas's early history as an American territory.
