About the Author
During the course of researching and writing this book, the author, Ersa Rhea Noland Smith, had the opportunity to speak with many of the law enforcement officers, past and present, who worked with Ray C. Noland. The stories brought to light from these interviews alone, would have made an exciting and colorful book.
However, within these pages you will find much more than just a collection of "war" stories." Ersa Rhea takes us into the Noland Home, to show us a personal side of the big Sheriff that no author-for-hire could ever know. She was there.
Intermingled with the election campaigns, emergency calls and everyday police work; you will find a slice to life behind the scenes.
The book generally focused on a twenty-year span from the 40's to the 60's, but encompasses and reflects on more than ten generations of Sheriff Noland's Family. You will find glimpses of mountain life during the turn of the century, as well as small town and rural living in the early to mid 1900's.
I have come to learn that sometimes you can be too close to something, to see it clearly. To a degree, I have found this to be true of my relationship with my grandfather. Although I knew him to be a great and important man, I had not really considered the far reaching impact his life made on so many others.
During the early stages of its writing, I knew that this would be an outstanding book. But having seen the finished product, I can see now that those of us who have assembled it are over-shadowed by those who lived it.
I hope that you enjoy reading it half as much as I have enjoyed helping to prepare it.
