1953. First edition. xliii, 95pp. and 6 full-page woodcuts by Helen Monro. The manuscript of this essay on Forest Trees was written in the mid-18th century, and discovered in the library at Mellerstain Castle, and is here printed verbatim for the first time. It gives the results of an early experiment in estate forestry on one of the many landed properties which formed the principal social units in the rural economy of Britain until relatively recent times. The author describes the several species which he planted and gives information about their protection, the preparation of the ground, planting methods and tending. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some patchy light damp fading to the rear board. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and some foxing. The corners are rubbed and nicked and the spine ends are lightly bumped with a tear of about 3/4" on the top of the front spine edge. The tear has been repaired and the top of the spine reinforced with a strip of tape.
