While lecturing to a group of his private students during the spring and summer of 1973, Dr. Mozzochi entered upon a plan of study to rewrite Landau's text from the naive, set-theoretic point of view. As in Grundlagen, he assumes as a starting point the Peano axioms for the natural numbers (preceded by a short but complete chapter explaining the basic algebraic concepts used throughout the text). A careful derivation of the properties of the natural numbers is then followed by a chapter on the construction of the rationals. At this point one chapter is presented on generalized sums anbd products, and a subsequent chapter is presented on powers. These chapters are followed by a chapter in which the constructidon of the reals by means of Dedekind cuts of rationals is presented in exhaustive detail. This chapter concludes with a proof of the fact that any complete ordered field is order isomorphic to the reals. In the final chapter there is presented a construction of the complex numbers together with a proof of the triangle inequality." Very Good in Very Good dust jacket.
