Rare - first printing of August Krogh's dissertation with the often missing announcement slip "Forsvaret finder Sted . ". His doctorate was awarded in 1903 on the basis of an investigation into the gas exchange of frogs. Here he was able to demonstrate that the skin respiration of the animals was largely constant, while the proportion of gas taken in through the lungs varied greatly and was controlled by the vagus nerve. Schack August Steenberg Krogh (1874-1949) was a Danish physiologist and zoologist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1920 for his discovery of the capillary motor regulatory mechanism, which he used in 1916 to establish the theory of basal metabolic rate in human metabolism.
