Originally intended as a sale catalogue (but the family wisely decided to retain most of the items listed), it is now published, without prices, "as an extended bibliophilic footnote to Kenneth Rose's 2003 biography Elusive Rothschild . . . and as a biographical coda to The Rothschild Library (1954), that monument to one of the most remarkable, and concentrated, feats of 20th-century book collecting". Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild GBE GM FRS (1910-1990), research scientist and head of the 1970s government "think tank", succeeded as third Baron Rothschild in 1937, by which time he had almost rounded off the extraordinary collection of 18th-century English books (and manuscripts) most of which he would donate to his Alma Mater, Trinity College, Cambridge. By way of foreword David McKitterick, former Librarian of Trinity, expertly reviews Lord Rothschild as a book collector. The disparate fragmenta from his wider collections that make up this catalogue range from the first English edition of Newton's Principia and an inscribed copy of Edward Heath's Music: a joy for life to Virginia Woolf's touching engagement present of The Common Reader, the scarce T.S. Eliot pamphlet Noctes Binanianae annotated by Rothschild's wartime lodger John Hayward and an extensive selection of Tauchnitz editions from Tring Park, the Rothschilds' country seat in Hertfordshire.
