Walt Whitman 1819 - 1892 "The frontispiece is a reproduction of the original engraving that appeared as the frontispiece in the first edition of 'Leaves of Grass,' published in 1855 at Whitman's own expense, and in which there are many pages whose type was set by Whitman's own hand. The original engraving was made by Samuel Hollyer (July, 1854) from a daguerreotype taken a year or so before by Gabriel Harrison. It marks with clarity the free and easy appearance of Whitman at the age of 34-35 during the period when he gave voice to his greatest inspiration."
