Wrappers. Covers rather faded. Inscribed by Iain Bain on the upper cover "Marked copy I.S.B." and with his marginal notes on three pages. "Nearly everybody who was anybody, and many who were nobody contributed to the annuals," writes Renier. "Any author whose name was likely to be known to the reading public was pursued by eager editors, and men as eminent as Walter Scott or Robert Southey were offered large sums for any trifle they cared to supply. Others were not so fortunate. Lamb declared with spleen in August 1830, 'For God's sake do not let me be pester'd with Annuals. They are all rogues who edit them, and something else who write in them . . . The sight of one of those Year Books makes me sick.'" Iain Bain contributed a supplementary essay to the 1973 edition of Frederick W. Faxon's Literary Annuals and Gift Books: a bibliography 1823-1903 (1912). Seller Inventory # BBC100270
