Published in 1639 by Francesco Rossi in Verona, Italy. First edition. In Latin. Bound in 1/2 later calf with five raised, gilt-bordered spine bands and a morocco spine label. All edges speckled. Quarto, 11.75" x 8.5." 97 pages + dedication page. Collated and complete minus the final blank. Beautiful high-quality hand-made paper and bold, black text and engraving impressions. Profusely illustrated: elaborate copper engraved architectural title page and 25 half-page copper engravings. Copious woodcut ornaments throughout including chapter head and tail pieces. SYNOPSIS This is an impressive anthropological work on funeral rites, rituals and celebrations from all over the world, both ancient and modern, including the funeral pyres of India, the entombment in pyramids and some funeral practices from the new worlds of the Americas, such as the natives of Peru. CONDITION REPORT Rubbing to extremities and some spots of soiling. Cracking of leather along spine label and crown of spine. The interior is in beautiful antiquarian condition for a 380-year old-old+ book. Relatively clean and bright white pages throughout. Some signs of finger handing throughout the ages - a few small page tears and smudges. No former owner inscriptions or former owner bookplates. No writing. Light offsetting from engravings. Some page waviness and light creasing after centuries of interacting with the climate.
