Valerie Beauchamp, alias Vera Brown, is a successful novelist of trashy romance novels who has recently found love in the form of a mysterious paramour who has swept her off her feet with his love letters. However, Valerie has just found out that her suitor is not only not a real person, but a joke concocted by her so-called friends. To get back at them Valerie decides to add a tontine to her will, the final survivor to inherit a fortune in the end. But before Valerie can enact her plan she is found brutally murdered.
