The story, set in 1928, follows Charles Dexter Ward's descent into obsession with his ancestor, Joseph Curwen, an alleged wizard of dubious repute. Ward, bearing a striking physical resemblance to Curwen, delves into Qabalistic and alchemical arts in an attempt to replicate his ancestor's arcane achievements.
