Ex-library copy. First edition (per single date upon copyright page). 272 pages. Hardcover; H 23.5cm x L 15.5cm. White dust jacket rubbed, library shelf sticker affixed at spine heel. Dark brown boards with several strips of tape residue at edges. Toned edges; swaths of black marker obscure library stamps upon top and bottom edges. Front free endpaper removed. Usual library marks and stamps upon title/copyright leaf; no other library markings readily apparent upon interior pages after a quick perusal. Pages 49-52 have shallow creases at fore-edge margins. Introduction; six pages of b/w illustrations; Epilogue; Selected Bibliography; Index. Awarded the Jesse Lee Prize in American Methodist History by the Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church. Uncommon biography of social reformer and racial equalitarian Gilbert Haven (1821-1880) who was elected Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1872. ISBN 0687147026.
