Non comune biografia di Giovanni Guidiccioni (Lucca, 1500-1541), poeta e oratore, che vest� l'abito ecclesiastico e studi� a Pisa, Padova, Bologna e Ferrara, ove si laure� in Legge nel 1525. Protetto da Papa Paolo II Farnese, da questi fu nominato governatore di Roma, poi Vescovo di Fossombrone, nunzio presso Carlo V, presidente della Romagna e infine governatore della Marca. A lui si deve la famosa "Orazione in difesa degli Straccioni" del 1533, in cui esortava i nobili lucchesi a non opprimere il popolo.
