Jascha Golowanjuk vividly relates the experiences of himself and his family when they were engulfed in the Russian Revolution. Jascha, whose foster-father was manager of the Russo-Asiatic Bank in Samarkand, was only twelve years old at the time, but his remembrances are vivid. Every grim experience of those terrible days is stamped indelibly on his mind. This is an excitingly different kind of `escape story'. It is of a period that is fast being forgotten, and of an eastern city which is hardly more than a romantic and beautiful name to most people. After the Bolsheviks occupied Samarkand, life became impossible for the moneyed classes, who were ruthlessly plundered and terrorized. Jascha's father organized an escape party to Bukhara. Disguised, and riding only by night, they were led by brutal and dubious guides across mountains and deserts infested with bandits. Twice they were forced back by unendurable conditions. At the third attempt they reached the Caspian Sea, from which they could reach civilization and freedom. This book is full of suspense, horror, and humour. The strange country which the small family has to traverse, its barbarous inhabitants, the social turmoil of the times, give an air of the fantastic to some of its pages.
