With charming colour illustrations by Anthony Young Chen in the tradition of the Ming and Yuan Dynasties. 8vo, publisher s original full brown leather in morocco grain, ornately decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine between four raised bands, gilt-decorated on the covers, moire silk endleaves, and with a red silk bookmark, a.e.g. 345 pp. A pristine copy, as mint. A PRISTINE COPY OF THIS CLASSIC STORY. Publication of Buck's second novel The Good Earth, was quite an event. The book received rave reviews ("A beautiful, beautiful book," said the Saturday Review); became a bestseller here and was translated into more than a dozen promise with a brilliance that passed the most optimistic expectations." And then, the Pulitzer. The Franklin Edition is richly decorated and tastefully designed. Buck s work is notable in that it was radical--she introduced Chinese life to readers at a time when xenophobia in the West was high--and she was a great storyteller.
