Hoffman, is putting out some fey elephant joke books, posters, sweat shirts and bumper stickers in the cause of registered Republicanism. One sleepy‐eyed elephant tiptoes across a poster on his hind legs with his sneakers off and dangling from one toe‐nail. “Walk softly but carry a big (GOP) vote,” he says. Another shows an elephant foot shod in a giant sneaker kicking a disgrunted donkey: “Let's put our best foot forward. Bounce back in 64.” A sweat shirt with “G.O.P.” in Greek letters like a college fraternity shows a pensive elephant contemplating his sneakered feet. “Elephants look ridiculous in cowboy boots,” says the sweat shirt. But since L.B.J. and Barry Goldwater are both men of the West, tall in the saddle, “I may go bankrupt overnight on the sweat shirt if they nominate Goldwater,” says Mr. Hoffman, moaning low."
