Title: THE GREAT REBELLION: ITS SECRET HISTORY, ...
Publisher: Harper& Brothers, New York

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, written on the cusp of the American Civil War, explores the origins of the Southern rebellion with historical insights and a keen analysis of the events leading up to it. Beginning with the Hartford Convention, the author examines the evolving doctrine of secession, its rise in the South, and the key role played by John C. Calhoun. The author argues that the claim of a state's right to secede was not widely accepted in the South before 1832, and was met with strong opposition from prominent figures like Thomas Ritchie and President Andrew Jackson. The book draws on primary sources, including General Jackson's proclamation and the Force Bill passed by Congress, to shed light on the tumultuous events of the time. Delving into the political machinations and motivations of the secessionists, the author exposes the depth of their ambition and self-interest. This book offers a valuable historical perspective on the causes of the Civil War, providing insights into the political climate and ideological conflicts that shaped the nation's destiny.
