About this Item

Description:

Square octavo: 208 p. with a folding map (railway time tables printed on the verso) and textual woodcut illustrations. Original green cloth binding, with gilt titles. Mild edgewear; else very good. Sabin 28469; Howes C901. The original owner's inscription on the front flyleaf reads: "T.R. Clapham, Grand Hotel, San Francisco, California. Nov. 1st 1870." The first page of the memoranda leaves at the rear has been filled in by Clapham with his schedule of train times and stations for crossing from New York to California (San Francisco) in 1870 and his sailing by British Naval Vessel from San Francisco to Liverpool (arriving March 13, 1871). The implication is that he purchased this book for $1.00 (noted in what looks like his hand on the front flyleaf) upon arrival in San Francisco, and recorded his journey retrospectively. His memoranda begins with a mention of the "10 May 1869 meeting of the two working engines at and last spike of the Great Transcontinental Rail'y driven at Promontory Point near Salt Lake City." Clapham has also annotated the folding map in red ink, marking points of elevation on the course of his journey, and with the legend "1870 T.R. Clapham crossed this new Transcontinental Railway from New York to San Francisco 21 Sept to 15 Oct 1870 = 24 days (Omaha to San Francisco 1914 miles) Total from New York to San Francisco 3319 miles". Thomas Richard Clapham (1837-1910) was a wealthy landowner from Austwick Hall, Yorkshire. His journal, covering the period 1860-1908, is held in the Clapham family papers at the North Yorkshire Records Office. Seller Inventory # 76188
