About this Item
First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine, xii, (13) - 432 pp., frontispiece (Lower Covero), preface, illustrated. This book is mainly written from a diary the author kept during a residence of two and a half years in New Mexico, and the matters contained in it are either drawn from careful personal observation, or other reliable sources. The classic description of New Mexico as it was when that centuries-old hispanic settlement passed into U. S. hands. His sketch of the history of New Mexico is the first to have been done from the local archives. He gives a very good picture of the beginnings of the amiable relationship among cultures that characterizes New Mexico. Davis was in New Mexico as the United States District Attorney, and also served as acting governor at one point. This account is quite literate and well written, and includes a narrative of his trip across the plains on the Santa Fe Trail. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers, light wear to corner edges and spine ends, else a good copy. This is a variant issue of the first edition bound and published by Harper & Brothers. The cloth is gray in color instead of maroon, and blind stamped, titles are stamped in gilt on the spine, front and rear endpapers are in yellow instead of dark brown, and measures 20 cm, instead of 19.5 cm. Everything else is the same as traditional bibliographies report. Seller Inventory # 41926
