The initial Guide was first published nearly 15 years ago and, with its periodic supplements, has become a principal source of historical literature on the U.S. armed forces. A series of pithy bibliographical essays by various experts are cross-referenced to a book list at the end of each subject area. The latest volume in this monumental project updates all the earlier categories and adds three new ones: military and naval medicine, ordnance, and museum collections as historical sources. This last chapter, especially, represents a welcome direction. These volumes are more than simple book lists; they are well-integrated and careful selections of the most significant books, articles, and other scholarly publications. The editors are tops in the field. Highly recommended for academic and large public institutions.
