Condition Description. Very Good. This copy was acquired from a bookseller who purchases publisher and distributor overstock. It was sold to me as a new book. It does appear to be an unsold overstock copy rather than a previously owned or used book. Clean, tight hardcover with an exceptionally clean and bright interior. No writing, highlighting, underlining, ownership marks, or other interior markings. Binding is firm and pages appear little used. I did not feel comfortable with classifying the book as “New” or “Fine,” because there are some signs of exterior wear. For example, the glossy pictorial boards remain bright and attractive, but show light to moderate shelf/storage wear, including surface rubbing and scuffing, a few scratches, and minor rubbing/bumping at corners and extremities, with tiny areas of exposed board at several corner tips, as shown in the photographs. Overall, a very clean, well-preserved copy with wear primarily confined to the exterior. Content Description. Gender Inequalities in Rural European Communities During 19th and Early 20th Century: A Historical Perspective examines the educational opportunities, social roles, and inequalities experienced by women in rural communities in Greece, Italy, and parts of the Balkans during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historian Polly Thanailaki approaches women's experiences through the interconnected perspectives of social history, gender studies, and the history of education. The book considers female illiteracy and schooling, attitudes toward women's education, marriage and family life, the patriarchal structure of rural communities, Protestant women missionaries and their educational activities, women's participation in village social life, and representations of women through traditional songs and dances. Individual chapters examine female illiteracy in the Greek countryside; women's schooling in rural Italy and the Balkans; comparisons between Greek and Italian peasant women; women missionaries and Protestant education; women's social life in villages; and women's position as reflected in folklore, music, and dance. A specialized scholarly study bringing together gender history, women's history, educational history, and the social history of rural Southern Europe. Of particular interest to researchers, students, and libraries concerned with women's studies, gender studies, European history, Greece, Italy, the Balkans, rural history, sociology of education, and nineteenth- and early twentieth-century social history. …
