A nice copy in contemporary paneled calf, neatly rebacked with spine label mounted (small leather patch on lower cover, corners worn, folding fortification plate with repaired tears no loss). First Edition in English, which contains numerous additions, alterations and improvements, and was adapted to the customs and actions of the English. Some forty-one woodcuts not in the French original have been added in the military section, which explains terms and phrases relating to artillery, attack and defence, the post and duties of officers of the army, and related matters. Part III on navigation includes terms relating to piloting, the building, rigging, working, and fighting of ships, the post and duty of sea-officers, &c. The plates include a depiction of a horse and rider, a folding plan of a fortification showing the method of an attack, and a folding plate of a masted ship with terms key. The original French edition, Les Arts de L Homme d �p�e ou le Dictionnaire du Gentilhomme, was published at Paris in 1678.
