The first US issue of Geo magazine, its Charter Issue, early 1979, with: a report on the revolution in Nicaragua with photographs by Susan Meiselas (two years before her book) and text by Richard Elman; a report on Ireland by Frances FitzGerald with color photos by Marc Riboud; US roadside art and architecture by Leslie Fiedler with photos mostly by Burk Uzzle; a photo-essay on China by Volker Hinz with short reports by various authors; climbing the Himalayan mountains with Reinhold Messner; Californian condors on the brink of extinction; and more. Geo was launched in the US in 1979 as a general interest magazine, following successful versions of the magazine in Germany and France. It is best known as a showcase of excellent photojournalism and for its in-depth writing. It ceased publication in the US in 1985. Edited by H.J. Kaplan.
