The November 1981 issue of the US edition of Geo magazine (Vol 3, No. 11), with: the largest dam ever built is in Brazil with color photographs by Sebastiao Salgado and others; "The Endless War of the Basques" photographed by Harry Gruyaert; a bittersweet return to The Gambia by Alex Haley and photos by Guido Mangold; the rise of Aspen as a playground of the rich by James Salter and photographs by Nicholas deVore; the appeal of Zen Buddhism; grizzlies; and more. Geo was launched in the US in 1979 as a general interest magazine, following successful versions of the magazine in Germany and France. It is best known as a showcase of excellent photojournalism and for its in-depth writing. It ceased publication in the US in 1985. Edited by Paige Rense.
