2-volume set. Dark green cloth, gilt titles spine, title and monogram on front, black line border along upper and lower edge, black circles motif on back. Gilt tops, brown endpapers. Covers vg, with tiny rubs corners, occasional to spine folds, rubbed spine extremities. Foxed edges. Old label on spine V2. Internally, both vols front hinge starting, slightly. Both vols have old college label on pastedown. Contents look untouched, mainly clean and bright; there is also foxing: occasional fox spot or margin patches, and occasional more heavily foxed page. There are 7 colour maps, some single some double page and one foldout, and 20 engraving-style plates. V1 Fold-out map frontispiece nicked at edge, with tissue guard, 13 plates and 4 other maps. V2 the other 7 plates and further 2 maps. This work of Wallace's was the pioneering work in zoogeography; it established the foundation of evolutionary zoogeography, and has been the key work for upwards of 100 years. He differed from Darwin in positing that environmental pressures led to divergence in populations of various locations. However these 2 giant figures in the development of evolutionary theory produced a joint publication in 1858, containing the arguments of both views, after which each pursued his own way.
