A near fine copy of a scarce collection of Cruikshank's illustrations for several popular novels of the period Rebacked in full calf with new endpapers and gilt titles and design on spine with raised bands Slight scuffing at corners and spine edges Minor chipping at spine ends Binding however, is quite strong and tight Gilt page edges all around Text is very clean with just slight traces of foxing, primarliy on plates All plates are hand-colored A gift inscription in a calligraphic hand on the reverse of the front endpaper ("To Henrietta-all my love on our book anniversary, Gilbert, November 1, 1945") which is likely when and by whom the attractive restoration was done The work is quite scarce to begin with, but this copy is even more unusual in having the original publisher's ads, all hand-colored plates and being in such excellent condition It was once a beautiful gift for Henrietta, and it would be a most memorable gift today George Cruikshank (1792--1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience Minor chipping at spine ends 82 + 6 p ads pp.
