About this Item
First edition. Octavo. With a 14-page introduction by H.G. Wells. Original brown cloth, stamped in gilt, white and blind (slight rubbing to extremities). With his clipped obituary pasted in at front. No foxing. Very good. 312 pages. No signatures or bookplates. No dust jacket. Apparently some copies have a frontispiece portrait, there is none in this copy. Notable for the introduction by H.G. Wells, in which he pays a glowing tribute to the book. George Meek (d. 1921), English author and literary bath-chairman of Eastbourne, was "discovered" by H.G. Wells, who met him at a Socialist meeting and invited him to lunch. Meek subsequently submitted several of his literary efforts to Wells, who insisted that he should abandon fiction writing and tell the story of this own life. Following Wells' advice (after earning a living for 19years by pulling a bath-chair along the parades at Eastbourne), Meek suddenly achieved fame with the publication of this book, in which he embodies the story and philosophy of his life.
