Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America, George W. Bush's presidency focused primarily on a foreign policy aimed at promoting U.S. security through unilateral preemptive action. This timely anthology examines Bush's decisions regarding the war on terrorism as well as domestic security, the economy, and the environment.
Reviews:
Grade 9 Up–After opening with a biographical sketch of Bush's life and political career, this volume provides opposing-viewpoint assessments of the President's reaction to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the policies of his first term. The 13 readings come from a variety of sources and are arranged in four thematic chapters: the war on terror and the invasion of Iraq, homeland security and its impact on civil liberties, the economy, and domestic policies affecting education and the environment. Three final readings examine Bush's transition into office after the disputed 2000 election and his successful efforts to increase the Republican Congressional majority in the 2002 mid-term election. The writers include pundits, scholars, and journalists from across the political spectrum. An appendix provides excerpts from 11 of Bush's speeches and press conferences. There are no photos or illustrations. While this book does offer a balanced discussion of Bush's first term, most of the readings are, or are very similar to, the partisan arguments that have been and continue to be aired (and are widely available) in both electronic and print media. This title does not have the historical perspective and analysis that make the others in the series such solid resources. Also, it is likely to become dated as the long-term effects of Bush's decisions and policies become clearer and his priorities change during his second term. These weaknesses limit this book's usefulness to report writers, making it at best an additional purchase.–Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
