Jacket sadly tatty, with edge wear, chipping, rubbing and loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners and folds rubbed with loss, round 'skinned' patch to front jacket (removal of old sticky label?), overall dust and time staining, spine browned. Not price clipped (10s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy in a poor jacket. 331pp. A novel of a small city brewer in the City of London during that late seventeenth century and early eighteenth century. The book deals with the introduction of gin drinking from Holland (mother's ruin) through the influence of William of Orange, and various financial scandals such as the abandonment of the Darien settlers and the South Sea Bubble. Jane Lane (1905-78), was the pen name of Elaine Kidner Dakers, British historical novelist and biographer distantly related to the Jane Lane who aided Charles II after his defeat at Worcester. She is best known for her books about the Stuart period and 18th century Scotland, written from a Catholic and Royalist perspective. Quite a scarce book.
