Contemporary boards, these rather worn especially to the corners, internally quite clean with only occasional patch of spotting to margins, no half-title appears to be present, 'Pratt's Gleanings, Vol. 4, Norfolk' written in ink to the backstrip in a contemporary hand, as well as ownership marks, hinges a little tender but binding holding soundly. Samuel Jackson Pratt (1749-1814) wrote a series of 'Gleanings' which included Wales, Holland and Westphalia. A note on p.xxx states '. that this Volume, though marked the FOURTH of Mr. Pratt's Gleanings, is but the Preliminary Volume of GLEANINGS IN ENGLAND; and , not-withstanding its being a separate and independent Work'. Charles Lamb rudely wrote of 'Gleanings' that they were 'a wretched assortment of vapid feelings'. Uncommon in the first edition. xxx, [2], 591pp.
