The three volume first edition of Edward Jesse's comprehensive study in natural history, accompanied by the first edition of his single volume study of Angling. The first editions of two works from English writer of natural history, Edward Jesse, in uniform half calf bindings. Consisting of Jesse's three volume 'Gleanings in Natural History', and the single volume 'An Angler's Rambles'.Published between 1832 and 1835, Jesse's three volume study of natural history is illustrated with one plate to volume I, one folding facsimile plate to volume II, and frontispiece and one further plate to volume III. Collated, complete.Jesse's single volume 'An Angler's Rambles', published in 1836, features a small number of vignette illustrations, and contains charming reflections on nineteenth century fishing and country life, featuring also a chapter on the role of cricket in village life, and the history of the game.With the armorial bookplate of Edward Griffiths of Newcourt to each front pastedown, and the former owner's bookplate of Alan Thornton of Witney to each front free endpaper. In half calf bindings, with paper covered boards. Significant fading to back strips, with minor rubbing to back strip head and tail. Light rubbing to boards, most concentrated to volumes I and II. Armorial bookplates to front pastedowns, with former owner's bookplates to front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound.
